1.) The Torah is the source of moral basis.
2.) "Following King Solomon's reign, tribal tensions led to the division of the community into a large kingdom of Israel in the north and a smaller kingdom of Judah in the land known as Judea to the south. During the ninth century BCE, the kingdom of Israel came under pressure of the expanding Assyrian empire and have had to pay tribute to Assyrian ruler. In 722 BCE, Assyrian forces conquered the northern kingdom and deported many of its inhabitants to other regions."

- Peaceful man who taught devotion to God and love for fellow human beings
- Attracted large crowds b/c of reputation for wisdom and miraculous powers
- Taught that “the kingdom of God is at hand” and was executed to a cross b/c of it
- Even after execution, Christian movement went on
- Compiled body of writings (accounts of Jesus’ life, reports of followers’ works, Christian teachings) known as New Testament
Principal figure in expansion of Christianity beyond Judaism was Paul of Tarsus
- Taught Christianity that attracted masses similarly to other religions of salvation
- Teachings explained world as result of God’s work
- Early Christians refused to honor Roman state, and resulted in Roman imperial authorities to eliminate Christianity as threat to empire
- Emperor Constantine legalized Christianity in 313 CE
5.) By military force, by having the leaders convert to Christianity (the people will follow), by organizing missionary campaigns.
